Best Natural Sunscreen Cheat Sheet

Sunshine. It’s life giving, yet dangerous. The combination of 246 sunny days per year, our love of the outdoors and the large percentage of fair skinned people here in Australia means we still have one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world.

I get asked a lot of questions about sunscreen around here! Understandable, really, as I’m pretty big on getting rid of toxic chemicals in our skincare. You’ll often hear me saying that one of the ways to cut down on unnecessary chemicals in your skincare is to simply cut down on the amount of skincare products that you use. However, sunscreen isn’t one of these. You can get away without using moisturiser, or shampoo, but if you live in Australia, you simply can’t get away without using sunscreen.

Introduction

In the years since I’ve been doing this sunscreen cheat sheet, not a lot of new sunscreens with natural physical blockers like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide have come on the market. This is because it’s pretty tricky to release a new sunscreen in Australia, thanks to the very strict standards set by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), which regulates sunscreens here.

1. All sunscreens sold in Australian must be registered with the TGA. This is because they are formulated to prevent skin cancer.

2.TGA regulations don’t require manufacturers to list ingredients on products with a therapeutic purpose (as sunscreens prevent cancer, they fall into this category).

3.The TGA regulates sunscreens, but not cosmetics with sunscreen ingredients (that’s up to NICNAS).

So if you’re looking for a natural sunblock that’s not listed here, it may be because the manufacturer hasn’t listed the ingredients, which they are quite entitled to do, but makes it very hard to review. Or it may be that the product isn’t a sunscreen at all, but is a cosmetic with sunscreen ingredients. (There’s more info about that here).

You can check out my ‘Moisturisers with SPF’ cheat sheet, and don’t forget to have a look at the ingredients you should avoid in sunscreens.

Sunscreen Ingredients

Before I start talking about ingredients, it’s important to note that sunscreens prevent skin cancer. You’re better off to use a sunscreen with a chemical absorber than no sunscreen at all. I am absolutely not saying to stop using sunscreen. What I am saying is that there are some active sunscreen ingredients that, although they definitely prevent you from getting burnt and thus getting skin cancer, may have other issues.

So, having said that, sunscreen ingredients are divided into active and inactive ingredients. Active ingredients are the ones that protect you from the sun. Inactive ingredients are things like moisturisers, fragrances and preservatives.

How to Choose a Good Natural Sunscreen

____________________________

I’ve got a whole article on the blog about the sunscreen ingredients that you should look out for in sunscreens, but here’s a quick list:

Active ingredients to avoid:

Inactive ingredients to avoid:

Personally, I always look out for mineral sunscreen (otherwise known as a physical sunscreen) that’s made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

Even if I’m out and about and can’t find a chemical free sunscreen, I always try to choose a sunscreen without oxybenzone, as I find it very irritating and so do my children. Try to find one with avobenzone instead.

Reef Safe Sunscreen

If you’re looking for reef safe sunscreen, there are a number of ingredients that you need to avoid:

In the reviews (below), I’ve let you know which ones are environmentally friendly sunscreen, and therefore reef safe, and which ones aren’t.

Top Five Natural Sunscreen Favourites

I get questions all the time about which products I actually use. So I thought I’d share my top five all time favourites with you on each Cheat Sheet.

I’m a reluctant sunscreen user. So many of them irritate me that I’d rather cover up from head to toe, stay in the shade and wear my enormous hat. But when I have to, these are the ones I use:

Wotnot Facial Sunscreen: I’ve been a massive fan of this since it came out. For me, it’s the best sunscreen for face. I find that it works brilliantly under makeup, doesn’t make you look white if you don’t wear makeup, and doesn’t irritate. Love!

Simple As That Sunscreen: Another great zinc sunscreen that I love just as much as the Wotnot one. My husband seems to prefer this one, and the kids will happily use this as well.

Natural Instinct Invisible: Another one that my kids like and will use. And I love this one because natural sunscreens are often expensive, but this one is not.

123 Nourish Me Facestick: It’s so hard to find a natural stick sunscreen, and this one is great. I liked it when it first came out, but it’s been reformulated and is now even easier to apply. I took this one with me on holiday recently, and carried it around in my day pack because it’s so light and easy.

Eco Logical baby: this could be the best baby sunscreen – it’s certainly popular. It’s a great sunscreen, and it works for the whole family. Unfortunately, this is no longer available.

Comments: Nothing to be concerned about with this zinc oxide sunscreen. The flavour is actual vanilla, like you’d put in cakes, so I don’t have an issue with that either. I’ve used and like this, and it makes a great sunscreen for toddlers and kids because of the delicious smell.

Comments: There are a couple of ingredients I’m not keen on here. Phenoxyethanol is an irritant, and a potential neurotoxin, and shouldn’t be used on babies, so I prefer to avoid it. There’s also dimethicone in this. It doesn’t score high in EWG, but I know that many of you prefer to avoid silicones, so I’m giving you the heads up. Otherwise, this would score low in EWG.

Comments: Very long ingredients list for this zinc and titanium dioxide sunscreen, and there’s a few I don’t like. There’s silicones (cyclopentasiloxane), and alumina (aluminium oxide) and phenoxyethanol. But the sunscreen ingredients are good ones, so it’s an okay product.

Comments: People ask me about this one all the time. The ingredients look fine, but it’s not registered by the TGA, and it shouldn’t be sold in Australia.

Regulations are there for a reason – we have the highest skin cancer rates in the world, and the best sunscreen regulations in the world. Badger is a great brand, but until they comply with TGA regulations for sunscreen, I won’t be using it on myself or my family.

There are plenty of good sunscreens with natural ingredients that do comply with Australian TGA regulations, so buy one of those instead.

If you’re not in Australia, it is a good ingredients list.

Comments: Another good ingredients list in this natural sunscreen for kids. The aluminium starch octenysuccinate is the only one you might question, as there are contamination concerns. But it’s a low concern, and I’m still happy with this sunscreen. It would probably score a 1 in EWG.

Comments: Another good natural sun cream from Natural Instinct. This one is a tinted sunscreen so that you don’t have ‘ghost face’ when you’re at the beach all day! As I mentioned in the kids sunscreen for this brand, the aluminium starch octenysuccinate is the only ingredient that you might question, but this scores a 2 in EWG, and the whole product scores a 1.

Sun Bum Baby Bum Premium Natural Lotion SPF30

Comments: I’ve had a few questions about this brand. This looks okay, except for the perfume, which means that I wouldn’t use it on myself or my children. Also, there’s the aluminium starch octenylsuccinate, which as I’ve mentioned before has contamination concerns, but they’re low. Do be aware, that while the baby sunscreen from this brand looks okay, that’s not the same for all the products from this brand.

Sun Bum Face Stick SPF30

Sun Bum Face Stick SPF30

Comments: While the baby stick looks okay, I can’t say the same for this one. These are all chemical absorbers, rather than physical barriers. They’re not the worst chemical absorbers – homosalate and octinoxate each score a 4 in EWG, and octinoxate scores a 6. But both homosalate and octinoxate are both suspected of being weak endocrine disrupters. BHT is an irritant, and again, suspected of being a weak endocrine disrupter. And then there’s fragrance and petrochemicals (paraffin). So I can’t say I’m super keen.

Sun Bum Original Spray Sunscreen SPF30

Sun Bum Original Spray Sunscreen SPF30

Comments: This one is a spray, which means you’re much more likely to inhale these chemicals – not good. It also makes it harder to apply enough sunscreen to protect your skin. Again, the protective ingredients are chemical absorbers, rather than physical barriers. Homosalate and octinoxate each score a 4 in EWG, and octinoxate scores a 6. Homosalate and octinoxate are both suspected of being weak endocrine disrupters. And there’s also the fragrance. I wouldn’t want to be breathing in any of these. I’d definitely give this one a miss.

We are Feel Good Inc. Sticky Zinc Sunscreen

Comments: This one says zinc sunscreen, and while there is zinc as the active ingredient, there’s also PEG’s, silicones, petrochemicals and BHT as the preservative (which is an irritant and allergen, and a weak endocrine disrupter). I’d choose another zinc sun cream!
