When you’ve got a baby, you use a lot of baby wipes. Think about how many nappy changes you do each day! And every time you use nappy wipes on your baby, you wipe potentially toxic ingredients over the most sensitive parts of your baby’s body.

Even if you don’t use any other natural baby products, you really should be using non toxic, natural baby wipes.

I know you’re looking for safer baby wipes, because I get so many emails about them! So in this baby wet wipes review, I’ve researched as many different baby wipes as I could find for this Cheat Sheet, to help you find the best brand of baby wipes for your little one.

Introduction

What are all those ingredients in wet baby wipes? Are they safe? How can you tell?

Ingredients in baby wipes have been linked to nappy rash and contact dermatitis. And although some of the big guys have cleaned up their acts over the last few years, there are still irritating and even toxic ingredients in some brands of baby wipes.

Many of these big companies still don’t list the ingredients on their websites. If you shop online, you can’t tell what’s in the packs. You physically have to go to supermarket, and stand there in the aisle searching up ingredients on your phone. Take your baby shopping with you? Yeah, good luck with checking up on those ingredients while trying to keep your baby entertained!

Which is why many of us just grab a pretty looking pack, only to get them home and find that our poor baby breaks out in a rash.

And that’s where I come in! I’ve been to the supermarket, taken photos of all the packs, then brought them home and looked up all the ingredients for you. So read on and find out which ones really are non toxic wipes, and which ones you (and your baby!) should avoid.

Baby Wipes: Toxic Ingredients You Should Avoid

Ingredients

Have you ever wondered what’s actually in baby wipes? I have! And I’ve done lots of reading and research so that I can share with you exactly what’s good and what’s not.

Disposable baby wipes all have similar ingredients. There’s two main parts:

  1. Cloth
  2. Cleansing solution

As with any skincare product, the key is to keep it simple. You want as few ingredients as possible, and you want those to be as good as they possibly can be.

When it comes to the cloth, you really want biodegradable baby wipes. You shouldn’t flush them, but you want them to break down. Most wipes are made from plastic fibres woven into cloth, so look for bamboo, cotton or woodfibre based wipes where possible.

Biodegradable and compostable baby wipes can go into your home compost as long as there’s no poo on them.

In the cleansing solution, you’re generally going to find a combination of:

The key to buying safer baby wipes, as with buying any skincare product, is to choose the best possible ingredients in the cleansing solution.

Below you’ll find a quick list of ingredients to look out for in baby wipes. If you see any of these on the back of the pack, put the pack down and go choose a pack of wipes without chemicals listed below!

You’ll find more information and lots more detail in this article about baby wipes ingredients.

Ingredients to avoid in baby wipes:

Baby Wipes Packaging

Baby wet wipes are just that – wet. Which means that compostable or biodegradable packaging just doesn’t work, as it would break down before the wipes made it into your nappy bag.

The best packaging we’ve found is the Ecocare packaging which is made of partly renewable plastics.

Otherwise, soft packaging can go into REDcycle bins if you’re in Australia. Outside of Australia, you’ll need to check where you can recycle soft plastics.

Packaging on wipes with flip top lids can also be recycled, but you need to separate the hard plastic part from the soft plastic and recycle the parts separately.

Flushable Baby Wipes

The problem with flushable wipes is that most just aren’t. There’s more information in this article about why you really shouldn’t flush wipes, even if the packaging says you can.

The only truly flushable ones are these wipes from Natracare. Natracare worked with Water UK to create paper tissue based wet wipes. So if you really must flush, please use the Natracare ones only! (The wipes solution ingredients are great, too.)

The same goes for septic safe baby wipes. If you can’t flush them, you can’t put them in your septic tank.

Green Light

Green light wipes are all biodegradable, have good ingredients and are free from synthetic fragrances.

ECOCARE Organic Baby Wipes

Updated May 2021

ECOCARE Organic Baby Wipes

The Ecocare wipes are made in the UK, with certified organic cotton fabric that’s fully biodegradable. The ingredients are good, too, and even the packaging is made with Cardia Biohybrid plastic which is partly renewable. The only drawback is that these organic baby wipes are hard to get hold of.

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice Powder*, Sodium Levulinate, Sodium Benzoate, Vanilla Planifolia (Vanilla) Fruit Extract*, Potassium Sorbate, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Citric Acid, Glycerin^, Sodium Chloride, Althaea Officinalis (Marshmallow) Leaf Extract*. *Organic  ^From Organic Karanja.

Ecoriginals NZ Baby Water Wipes

Ecoriginals baby wipes are now made in New Zealand with biodegradable fabric. The ingredients are good, with just one quibble. The packaging is easy to recycle, too, in your local REDcycle bin.

Luv Me Eco Bamboo Wet Wipes

This is another brand made in New Zealand. Again, fragrance free, biodegradable wipes with flip top packaging. As with the ecoriginals wipes, my only question is about the soybean amino acid ingredient.

Luv Me Eco Plant Wet Wipes

Wotnot Baby Wipes

Updated May 2021

Wotnot Baby Wipes
Buy Wotnot at Hello Charlie.

Wotnot wipes are one of my favourites. They’ve been around for years, they use lots of lovely organic ingredients and the bamboo wipes themselves are biodegradable. The brand is made in China, and the packaging is made of recyclable soft plastics that can go to REDcycle.

Ingredients: Purified Water, Decyl Glucoside, Certified Organic Aloe Barbadensis (Certified Organic Aloe Vera), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Sodium Citrate, Citric Acid and Silver Dihydrogen Citrate

Orange Light

Orange light wipes are ones that aren’t biodegradable, or that are biodegradable but with an ingredient or two that I don’t like.

Bambure Bamboo Baby Wipes

Updated May 2021

Bambure Bamboo Baby Wipes

The Bambure bamboo wipes are in my orange list because there are a couple of ingredients that score a 3 in the EWG skindeep database. I would still use these in a pinch, though, as there’s not too much to be concerned about.

They’re biodegradable, with essential oils for fragrance. The flip top lid will need to be separated for recycling. These are made in China, too.

Ingredients: Aqua (purified and de-ionized water), Glycerin, Sodium Benzoate, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Lavandula Augustifola Oil (Lavender Oil), Citric Acid, Tartaric Acid, Sodium Citrate, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Potassium Sorbate, Citrus Medica Limonum Oil (Lemon Oil), Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera)*, Tea Tree Extract, Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract (Chamomile)*. *Organic ingredients

Bambure Natural Wipes for Baby

Updated May 2021

Bambure Natural Baby Wipes

The ingredients are the same as the bamboo ones above, but the wipes themselves are not biodegradable. When there are so many great choices that are biodegradable, these are firmly in my orange list – avoid single use plastic when there are alternatives!

Ingredients: Aqua (purified and de-ionized water), Glycerin, Sodium Benzoate, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Lavandula Augustifola Oil (Lavender Oil), Citric Acid, Tartaric Acid, Sodium Citrate, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Potassium Sorbate, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera), Tea Tree Extract, Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract (Chamomile). *Organic ingredients

Goat Kids Bamboo Wipes

Updated May 2021

Goat Kids Bamboo Wipes

These aren’t too bad. The wipes are fragrance free, biodegradable and made in Australia. There are a couple of ingredients that are known to be allergens, which is why these have made it to my orange list.

The packaging is the flip top lid type.

Ingredients: Water, Cocamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Caprae Lac (Goats Milk Powder), Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis Gel Extract), Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E), Benzoic Acid.

Huggies Ultimate Baby Wipes

Updated May 2021

Huggies Ultimate Baby Wipes

Surprisingly, these Huggies unscented wipes aren’t too bad. There’s still an ingredient that I avoid, but it scores a 3 in EWG which really isn’t too bad.

However, the wipes aren’t biodegradable, and they use the more difficult to recycle flip top lid.

Don’t think that this makes all Huggies wipes okay, though. This variant is the only one that I would even consider using. See the red list for the other ingredients in Huggies baby wipes.

Ingredients: Water, Hydroxyacetophenone, Caprylyl Glycol, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Citrate, Citric Acid

Little Innoscents Baby Wipes

Updated May 2021

Little Innoscents Baby Wipes

Another one that’s only in my orange list because they’re not biodegradable. The Little Innoscents wipes are made in Australia, though, and have good ingredients. Flip top lid again, so some separation required before recycling.

Ingredients:  Water, Glycerine, Glyceryl Caprylate, Potassium Sorbate, Coco Glucoside, Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice), Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Citric Acid.

Mommy Care Biodegradable Eco Baby Wipes

Updated May 2021

Mommy Care Biodegradable Eco Baby Wipes

This one is in my orange list because of the benzyl alcohol. It’s not recommended for use with babies, and it’s also an irritant. When there are better options available, I’d avoid this ingredients.

Otherwise, the wipes are biodegradable, and the fragrance is from essential oils rather than synthetics. These are made in Israel, with flip top lid packaging.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leave Juice (Organic), Glycerin, Sodium Citrate, Gluconolactone, Benzyl Alcohol, Sodium Dehydroacetic, Sodium Benzoate, Capryplyl/Capryl Glucoside, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Chamomila Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract (Organic), Citric Acid, Rosmarinu Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Water, Organic Helianthus Annus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Tocopherol.

Niki’s Natural Baby Wipes

Updated May 2021

Niki’s Natural Baby Wipes

This one is in my orange list because of the grapefruit extract. The reason for this is that grapefruit extract can be contaminated with some nasties, including parabens. The amounts are tiny, but I’ll leave you to make that choice.

Website says made in Australia, but the packaging says Australian owned. As far as I know, there are no biodegradable wipes being made in Australia so I’ve asked the company to clarify this.

The packaging has a flip top lid, so needs to be separated before it can be recycled.

Ingredients: Water, glycerin, betaine, gluconolactone & sodium benzoate, honey (Manuka), Chamomile Recutita (Matricaria) flower extract, sorbitan oleate decylglucoside crosspolymer, Citrus Grandis (grapefruit) extract, Cocos Nucifera (coconut) oil, sodium citrate.

Rascal and Friends Baby Wipes

Updated May 2021

Rascal + Friends Sensitive Wipes

The Rascal and Friends wipes ingredients are fine with no synthetic fragrances, but the wipes aren’t biodegradable. They’re made in China, so why not go the biodegradable option and skip single use plastic? Again, flip top lid that needs to be separated before recycling.

Ingredients: Aqua (water), Glycerin, Sodium Citrate, Punica Granatum Fruit Extract, Citric Acid, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Polyglyceryl -4 Caprate, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Gluconolactone & Sodium Benzoate

Thank You Baby Wipes

Updated May 2021

Thank You Baby Wipes

Thankyou baby wipes have phenoxyethanal as a preservative. I’m not keen on phenoxyethanol in baby wipes as it’s an irritant. That’s the only ingredient that I’m not keen on. However, the wipes aren’t biodegradable, so I’m afraid that this also means that they’re in the orange list.

Made in the USA, with flip top style packaging.

Ingredients: Purified Water, Olus Oil, Glycerin, Lauryl Glucoside, Polyglyceryl-2-Dipolyhydroxystearate, Glyceryl Oleate, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Symphytum Officinale (Comfrey) Extract, Olea Europaea Fruit (Olive) Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate

WaterWipes

Updated May 2021

WaterWipes

WaterWipes aren’t biodegradable, which is my biggest bugbear with these, and the reason that they’re on my orange list. However, the UK version is now biodegradable (the wipes themselves are made in Ireland) so I’ll be keeping my eye out for these hitting Australian shores.

There has been a bit of controversy around the Grapefruit seed extract, as it contains a trace of benzalkonium chloride. This has been tested and shown that the trace is 0.002%, which is miniscule. Having knowledge means you can make an informed decision, and if this is concerning to you, you might want to skip these. I would say, though, that most manufacturers don’t test or disclose trace elements of contaminants in their ingredients, and I applaud this transparency.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua) 99.9%, Citrus Grandis (grapefruit) seed extract*. *Contains trace of Benzalkonium Chloride

Red Light

Regardless of biodegradability, baby wipes fall under this category if the solution contains synthetic fragrances/perfumes and/or high hazard ingredients that are in our ingredients to avoid lists, and even moderate hazard ingredients if there’s enough of them (since the solution is a “leave on” component of baby wipes).

Aldi Mamia Fragrance Free Wipes

Updated May 2021

Aldi Mamia Fragrance Free Wipes

The fragrance free Aldi baby wipes might be free of perfumes, but there are still ingredients that I prefer to avoid.

They’re made in Australia, but they’re not biodegradable and the packaging has the flip top lid.

Ingredients: Water, Propylene Glycol, Polysorbate 20, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Extract, Chamomila Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E)*, Citric Acid.

Aldi Mamia Scented Baby Wipes

Updated May 2021

Aldi Mamia Scented Baby Wipes

Almost exactly the same as the fragrance free Aldi Mamia baby wipes above, but these have synthetic fragrance with all the issues that implies.

Ingredients: Water, Propylene Glycol, Polysorbate 20, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Extract, Chamomila Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E), Citric Acid, Fragrance.

Cub Fragrance Free Baby Wipes

Updated May 2021

Cub Fragrance Free Baby Wipes

This version of Cub wipes are fragrance free, but there’s still quite a few ingredients that I avoid, so they’re not going to get a recommendation from me anytime soon. Not biodegradable, flip top lid packaging, and they’re made in the UK.

Ingredients: Water, Propylene Glycol, Paraffinum Liquidum, Petrolatum, Ceteth-20, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Tocopherol, Fragrance, Glycerin, Cetyl Alcohol, Panthenol, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Polysorbate 80.

Curash Simply Water Baby Wipes

Updated May 2021

Curash Simply Water Baby Wipes

Misleadingly called “simply water” wipes, which avoids mentioning the preservatives that are used. Water based baby wipes they might be, but they still need preservatives to stop them getting mouldy.

Fragrance free, and made in Australia but not biodegradable and with a plastic flip top lid.

Ingredients: Water, Polysorbate 20, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol.

Curash Soothing Baby Wipes (Aloe Vera and Chamomile)

Updated May 2021

Future Normal Bamboo Baby Wipes

Updated May 2021

Future Normal Bamboo Baby Wipes

Biodegradable bamboo cloth, essential oil fragrance – at first glance these look pretty good. Someone asked me about these in my Facebook Group, and when you look a bit closer, there’s quite a few dodgy ingredients. Not one that I would recommend.

Made in China, with flip top lid packaging.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Aloe Bardadensis Extract^, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract^, Green Tea Extract^, Phenoxyethanol, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract^, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride, Polysorbate 20, Didecyl Dimonium Chloride, Melaleuca Alternafolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Oil^, Citric Acid (Citral, D-Limonene, Linalool- natural components of essential oils). ^= Organic.

Updated May 2021

Gaia Bamboo Baby Wipes

Gaia baby wipes are another one that look good on face value. They’re biodegradable with essential oil fragrance and a couple of organic ingredients. But there’s quite a few not-so-great ingredients which propels these to my red list.

Made in China, with flip top lid packaging.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Aloe Bardadensis Extract*, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract *, Camellia Sinensis Leaf (Green Tea) Extract*, Phenoxyethanol, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract*, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride, Polysorbate 20, Didecyl Dimonium Chloride, Melaleuca Alternafolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Oil *, Citric Acid (Citral, D-Limonene, Linalool – naturally occurring components of essential oils). =Organic

Huggies Coconut Oil Baby Wipes

There’s only one version of the Huggies wipes which make it to the orange list and that’s the Huggies unscented baby wipes ultimate ones. The rest are firmly in the red list, like this one. Synthetic fragrance means that these are never going to get the nod from me.

Made in Singapore, not biodegradable, and with flip top lid packaging.

Ingredients: Water, Butoxy PEG-4 PG Amodimethicone, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Benzoate, Caprylyl Glycol, Coco-Betaine, Malic Acid, Fragrance, Sodium Citrate, Cocos Nucifera Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate.

Ingredients: Water, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Glycerin, Carbomer Citric Acid, Coco-Glucoside, Fragrance, Glyceryl Oleate, Lauryl Glucoside, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, p-Anisic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Glyceryl Polyacrylate

Ingredients: Purified Water, Glycerin, Polysorbate 20, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Aloe Barbadensis Extract, Chamomile Recutita Flower Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Citric Acid.

Dry Baby Wipes

One way to avoid the toxic ingredients that are in many baby wipes is to go with a dry baby wipe. You can just add water or make up your own baby wipe solution to spray on.

Be careful though. Not all of them are biodegradable. Reynard dry baby wipes aren’t biodegradable, and neither are the Little One’s baby dry wipes.

After Touch instant wipes are biodegradable, and so is plain cotton wool.

Reusable Baby Wipes

Although this article is all about disposable baby wipes, you can always try homemade baby wipes with your own wipes solution.

It’s super easy to use washable baby wipes, and I’ve got a massive article for you to read if you’re interested.

Where to Buy the Best Baby Wipes
