Introduction

You should be cleaning your teeth twice a day, in the morning, and before bed. That’s a lot of toothpaste over a lifetime.

In this cheat sheet, I’m aiming to help you work out which natural toothpaste is best for you and your family.

Why Use Natural Toothpaste?

Choosing a toothpaste with natural ingredients doesn’t mean that you’re going to have cavities in your teeth, or that your teeth won’t be as clean as if you use ‘normal’ toothpaste.

With many natural toothpastes, you’ll get just as good a clean and you won’t be ingesting toxins or impurities.

Brushing your teeth with a toothbrush does most of the physical act of cleaning, and you could do this with just water, removing leftover food from your teeth. To eliminate bacteria that cause gum disease and halitosis, you need a toothpaste that contains ingredients to help with this. If you’re wondering, is natural toothpaste effective? The answer is yes. There are plenty of natural toothpastes that will do a great job of cleaning your teeth, preventing gum disease, and freshening your breath.

Toxic Toothpaste Ingredients

What’s actually in toothpaste?

I’ve written a whole article about toothpaste ingredients, but here’s a quick rundown of what you’ll find in toothpaste:

  • Abrasives (to help your toothbrush remove food, plaque and stains)
  • Humectants and binders (to keep your toothpaste moist and stop it from going hard in the tube)
  • Detergents (to help loosen food and to foam up, which isn’t necessary, but people seem to like)
  • Flavours (either synthetic or natural, to make your toothpaste taste good)
  • Preservatives (so that your toothpaste doesn’t go off or harbour harmful bacteria)
  • Colourings (titanium dioxide to make it white, or other colours for tooth gels and toothpastes)
  • Therapeutics (like fluoride to help prevent tooth decay)

So which toxic ingredients in toothpaste should you avoid?

  • Artificial colours
  • Artificial flavours
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Carrageenan
  • Diethanolamine (DEA)
  • Fluoride
  • Microbeads
  • Parabens
  • Propylene glycol
  • Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and Sodium laureth sulphate (SLES)
  • Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate
  • Titanium dioxide nanoparticles
  • Triclosan

Baby & Kids Toothpaste Cheat Sheet

There are also some ingredients that might look scary, but are actually good:

  • Activated charcoal (an abrasive that also helps remove surface stains on teeth)
  • Hydroxyapatite (acts like fluoride to remineralise teeth)
  • Potassium nitrate (used to help combat tooth sensitivity, and is considered the safest active ingredient for sensitive teeth. Note that this is not the same as potassium nitrite)
  • Titanium dioxide (in it’s non nano form is harmless, so this is one you don’t need to worry about)
  • Xylitol (sweetener that also seems to be beneficial in preventing tooth decay)

Top Five Natural Favourites

What is the best natural toothpaste to use? There are lots of great natural toothpaste options, and trying to keep it to just five is hard for me! I’ve tried dozens of toothpastes over the years, but these are the ones that I keep coming back to:

Dr Brite Mineral toothpaste with charcoal: I don’t know how they do it, but this is an activated charcoal toothpaste that doesn’t make a mess of your bathroom.

Dr Bronner: my family’s favourite. They say it’s the closest to a ‘normal’ toothpaste, and I like it because it tastes great and gets your teeth shiny clean.

Lavera Basis Toothpaste – Mint Whitening Toothpaste: my pick for the best vegan toothpaste with fluoride. It can be hard to find a fluoride toothpaste with natural ingredients, and this one is great.

The Humble Co Charcoal Toothpaste: if you’re into charcoal toothpaste, but want fluoride, this is awesome. Great natural ingredients and this company gives back by providing dental care to children in need.

Weleda Salt Toothpaste: my all time favourite. I’ve been using this for years, and although I mix it up (I usually have at least two toothpastes on the go) this is the one that I’m never without. Love, love, love!

A Bit Hippy Remineralising Natural Toothpaste

A Bit Happy Remineralising Natural Toothpaste

Comments: This one looks pretty good apart from a couple of things. I’m not super keen on added flavour, even if it is ‘natural’, but that’s a small quibble. The sodium lauroyl sarcosinate is a penetration enhancer, and there can be concerns with nitrosamine contamination. This ingredient only scores a 3 in EWG, so it’s not a big concern.

Fluoride: No

EWG Ratings: not listed

Ingredients: Aqua, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice, Calcium Carbonate, Caprylic Capric Triglyceride, Xylitol, Hydroxyapatite, Sclerotium Gum, Natural Flavour, Sodium N-Lauroylsarcosinate, Cinnamomum Zeylanicum (Cinnamon) Leaf Oil, Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf Extract.

A Bit Hippy Advanced Natural Toothpaste

A Bit Hippy Advanced Natural Toothpaste

Comments: Although the ingredients are different to the other A Bit Hippy toothpaste, my comments are the same. All in all, another reasonable choice.

Fluoride: No

EWG Ratings: not listed

Ingredients: Sorbitol, Calcium Carbonate, Tapioca, Aqua, Sodium Bicarbonate, Hydroxyapatite, Xylitol, Sodium N-Laurylsarcosinate, Natural Mint Flavour, Natural Lime Flavour, Xanthan Gum, Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf Extract.

Aloe Dent Whitening Aloe Vera Toothpaste – Fluoride Free

Aloe Dent Whitening Aloe Vera Toothpaste - Fluoride Free

Comments: It’s the sodium hydroxymethylglycinate that stands out on this one for me. It’s a formaldehyde releaser and scores a 6 in EWG. Even though it’s in small quantities, it’s enough for me not to recommend this one. There’s also sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, which is a penetration enhancer, and there can be concerns with nitrosamine contamination. This ingredient only scores a 3 in EWG, so it’s not a big concern.

Fluoride: No

Auromere Ayurvedic Herbal Toothpaste – Original Licorice

Auromere Ayurvedic Herbal Toothpaste - Original Licorice

Comments: This ayurvedic herbal toothpaste scores a 4 in EWG because of the clove and cinnamon, which can be an issue if you use too much of them. But there’s not a lot of them in here, and I’m fine with all the other ingredients, too.

Other Flavours: Auromere Ayurvedic Herbal Toothpaste – Cardamom Fennel

Cedel Toothpaste Sensitive

Cedel Toothpaste Sensitive

Comments: There’s a few ingredients that stand out here. The SLS, which is an irritant. There’s saccharin, which doesn’t score high in EWG, but it’s an artificial sweetener and I always avoid those, and paraffin which is a petrochemical. Plus there’s artificial flavour. All in all, not one that I would use.

Comments: This one also has sodium lauroyl sarcosinate. As I mentioned above, it’s a penetration enhancer, and there can be concerns with nitrosamine contamination. This ingredient only scores a 3 in EWG, so it’s not really worth worrying about. Do also note that there’s carrageenan, which may make it unsuitable for kids if they’re not spitting toothpaste out yet. All in all, a reasonable choice with good ingredients.

Doterra On Guard Natural Toothpaste

Comments: This toothpaste has carrageenan (so probably not suitable for children who aren’t yet spitting toothpaste), sodium lauroyl sarcosinate and titanium dioxide. None of these are big concerns, but they may add up to a product you don’t want to use.

There’s also wintergreen essential oil. It’s in very small quantities, but it’s not suitable for children or pregnant women.

If you’ve never used a black toothpaste before, I suggest either using it in the shower, or leaning right into the basin to spit so that you don’t get it everywhere!

Also, if you’re looking for a non mint whitening toothpaste, check out their cinnamon toothpaste.

Sunshine. It’s life giving, yet dangerous. The combination of 246 sunny days per year, our love of the outdoors and the large percentage of fair skinned people here in Australia means we still have one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world.

I get asked a lot of questions about sunscreen around here! Understandable, really, as I’m pretty big on getting rid of toxic chemicals in our skincare. You’ll often hear me saying that one of the ways to cut down on unnecessary chemicals in your skincare is to simply cut down on the amount of skincare products that you use. However, sunscreen isn’t one of these. You can get away without using moisturiser, or shampoo, but if you live in Australia, you simply can’t get away without using sunscreen.

Introduction

In the years since I’ve been doing this sunscreen cheat sheet, not a lot of new sunscreens with natural physical blockers like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide have come on the market. This is because it’s pretty tricky to release a new sunscreen in Australia, thanks to the very strict standards set by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), which regulates sunscreens here.

1. All sunscreens sold in Australian must be registered with the TGA. This is because they are formulated to prevent skin cancer.

2.TGA regulations don’t require manufacturers to list ingredients on products with a therapeutic purpose (as sunscreens prevent cancer, they fall into this category).

3.The TGA regulates sunscreens, but not cosmetics with sunscreen ingredients (that’s up to NICNAS).

So if you’re looking for a natural sunblock that’s not listed here, it may be because the manufacturer hasn’t listed the ingredients, which they are quite entitled to do, but makes it very hard to review. Or it may be that the product isn’t a sunscreen at all, but is a cosmetic with sunscreen ingredients. (There’s more info about that here).

You can check out my ‘Moisturisers with SPF’ cheat sheet, and don’t forget to have a look at the ingredients you should avoid in sunscreens.

Sunscreen Ingredients

Before I start talking about ingredients, it’s important to note that sunscreens prevent skin cancer. You’re better off to use a sunscreen with a chemical absorber than no sunscreen at all. I am absolutely not saying to stop using sunscreen. What I am saying is that there are some active sunscreen ingredients that, although they definitely prevent you from getting burnt and thus getting skin cancer, may have other issues.

So, having said that, sunscreen ingredients are divided into active and inactive ingredients. Active ingredients are the ones that protect you from the sun. Inactive ingredients are things like moisturisers, fragrances and preservatives.

Oxybenzone: The Sunscreen Ingredient That’s Killing Our Coral

The Ultimate Guide to Toxic Sunscreen Ingredients

How to Choose a Good Natural Sunscreen

____________________________

I’ve got a whole article on the blog about the sunscreen ingredients that you should look out for in sunscreens, but here’s a quick list:

Active ingredients to avoid:

  • Oxybenzone
  • Octinoxate
  • Homosalate
  • Octisalate
  • Octocrylene
  • Benzophenone-4
  • Benzophenone-8
  • Menthyl anthranilate
  • PABA
  • Padimate O
  • Trolamine salicylate

Inactive ingredients to avoid:

  • Phenoxyethanol
  • Phthalates
  • Parabens
  • PEGs
  • Fragrances
  • Synthetic colours
  • Problematic preservatives, including Methylisothiazolinone
  • Retinyl palmitate (Vitamin A palmitate)

Personally, I always look out for mineral sunscreen (otherwise known as a physical sunscreen) that’s made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

Even if I’m out and about and can’t find a chemical free sunscreen, I always try to choose a sunscreen without oxybenzone, as I find it very irritating and so do my children. Try to find one with avobenzone instead.

Reef Safe Sunscreen

If you’re looking for reef safe sunscreen, there are a number of ingredients that you need to avoid:

  • Oxybenzone
  • Octinoxate
  • 4-methylbenzylidene camphor
  • Octocrylene
  • Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)
  • Parabens

In the reviews (below), I’ve let you know which ones are environmentally friendly sunscreen, and therefore reef safe, and which ones aren’t.

Top Five Natural Sunscreen Favourites

I get questions all the time about which products I actually use. So I thought I’d share my top five all time favourites with you on each Cheat Sheet.

I’m a reluctant sunscreen user. So many of them irritate me that I’d rather cover up from head to toe, stay in the shade and wear my enormous hat. But when I have to, these are the ones I use:

Wotnot Facial Sunscreen: I’ve been a massive fan of this since it came out. For me, it’s the best sunscreen for face. I find that it works brilliantly under makeup, doesn’t make you look white if you don’t wear makeup, and doesn’t irritate. Love!

Simple As That Sunscreen: Another great zinc sunscreen that I love just as much as the Wotnot one. My husband seems to prefer this one, and the kids will happily use this as well.

Natural Instinct Invisible: Another one that my kids like and will use. And I love this one because natural sunscreens are often expensive, but this one is not.

123 Nourish Me Facestick: It’s so hard to find a natural stick sunscreen, and this one is great. I liked it when it first came out, but it’s been reformulated and is now even easier to apply. I took this one with me on holiday recently, and carried it around in my day pack because it’s so light and easy.

Eco Logical baby: this could be the best baby sunscreen – it’s certainly popular. It’s a great sunscreen, and it works for the whole family.

Comments: Nothing to be concerned about with this zinc oxide sunscreen. The flavour is actual vanilla, like you’d put in cakes, so I don’t have an issue with that either. I’ve used and like this, and it makes a great sunscreen for toddlers and kids because of the delicious smell.

Comments: There are a couple of ingredients I’m not keen on here. Phenoxyethanol is an irritant, and a potential neurotoxin, and shouldn’t be used on babies, so I prefer to avoid it. There’s also dimethicone in this. It doesn’t score high in EWG, but I know that many of you prefer to avoid silicones, so I’m giving you the heads up. Otherwise, this would score low in EWG.

Comments: People ask me about this one all the time. The ingredients look fine, but it’s not registered by the TGA, and it shouldn’t be sold in Australia.

Regulations are there for a reason – we have the highest skin cancer rates in the world, and the best sunscreen regulations in the world. Badger is a great brand, but until they comply with TGA regulations for sunscreen, I won’t be using it on myself or my family.

There are plenty of good sunscreens with natural ingredients that do comply with Australian TGA regulations, so buy one of those instead.

If you’re not in Australia, it is a good ingredients list.

Comments: While the baby stick looks okay, I can’t say the same for this one. These are all chemical absorbers, rather than physical barriers. They’re not the worst chemical absorbers – homosalate and octinoxate each score a 4 in EWG, and octinoxate scores a 6. But both homosalate and octinoxate are both suspected of being weak endocrine disrupters. BHT is an irritant, and again, suspected of being a weak endocrine disrupter. And then there’s fragrance and petrochemicals (paraffin). So I can’t say I’m super keen.

Ingredients: Avobenzone 2.00%, Homosalate 15.00%, Octinoxate 7.50%, Octisalate 5.00%, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Beeswax, BHT, Cetyl Alcohol, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Fragrance, Ozokerite, Paraffin, Polyester-8, Polyethylene, Tocopheryl Acetate.

Sun Bum Original Spray Sunscreen SPF30

Sun Bum Original Spray Sunscreen SPF30

Comments: This one is a spray, which means you’re much more likely to inhale these chemicals – not good. It also makes it harder to apply enough sunscreen to protect your skin. Again, the protective ingredients are chemical absorbers, rather than physical barriers. Homosalate and octinoxate each score a 4 in EWG, and octinoxate scores a 6. Homosalate and octinoxate are both suspected of being weak endocrine disrupters. And there’s also the fragrance. I wouldn’t want to be breathing in any of these. I’d definitely give this one a miss.

Comments: Another natural zinc sunscreen. I personally find this one a little greasy, but it’s really moisturising and offers great sun protection. The straightforward UV Natural sunscreen version of this, and the sport version of this brand have very similar ingredients, and they’re just as good.

We are Feel Good Inc. Sticky Zinc Sunscreen

Comments: This one says zinc sunscreen, and while there is zinc as the active ingredient, there’s also PEG’s, silicones, petrochemicals and BHT as the preservative (which is an irritant and allergen, and a weak endocrine disrupter). I’d choose another zinc sun cream!

The Best Baby Soap & Baby Wash: Researched and Reviewed

Every day, our children are exposed to at least 27 different chemicals through personal care products. And most of these chemicals have not been tested for safety on children.

Think about when you wash your baby.

You put him in the tub and add some baby wash. For a start, baby skin is up to 30% thinner than adults’ skin. The water is warm, which opens up the pores of his already very thin skin. The heat also vaporises some of the chemicals, and your baby breathes them in. Your baby accidentally swallows some of the water, and you splash some in his eyes.

Baby wash might be a ‘rinse off’ product, but there are lots of opportunities for those chemicals to get into your baby’s delicate and developing body.

So what exactly are the ingredients in your baby’s bath products? Are they safe? How can you tell?

Ingredients in baby soap have been linked to endocrine disruption; skin allergies; and even heightened risks of cancer. And although some of the big guys have cleaned up their acts over the last few years, there are still plenty of irritating and even toxic ingredients in some brands of baby wash.

Many of these big companies still don’t list the ingredients on their websites. If you shop online, you can’t tell what’s in the packs. You physically have to go to supermarket, and stand there in the aisle searching up ingredients on your phone. Take your baby shopping with you while checking on ingredients? Good luck with that!

It’s easy to understand why so many of us just grab a pretty looking pack, only to get it home and find that not all the ingredients are great.

So that’s where Hello Charlie comes in. I’ve been to the supermarket, taken photos of all the products, then brought them home and looked up all the ingredients for you. Read on and find out which baby soaps and washes get the Hello Charlie recommendation, and which ones you (and your baby!) should avoid.

I’ve researched 59 different baby soaps and baby washes ! I didn’t do all of the mainstream ones, because I know that they’re going to be mostly the same. But I did try to do as many ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ ones as possible. The list of baby soaps that I’ve reviewed are all in alphabetical order, below.

The Best Laundry Detergents: Researched and Reviewed

There’s nothing as nice as the smell of freshly washed clothes, is there? Unfortunately, your laundry detergent could be having a harmful effect both on your family and on the environment.

That fresh laundry smell can come at a high cost. Laundry fragrances are designed to stay in your clothes, meaning that your skin and lungs are constantly exposed to them. It’s the same with other toxic ingredients used in laundry detergents. They wouldn’t be so bad if it was just a one time exposure, but some of these ingredients are designed to stick to your clothing, which means that you can’t get away from them.

Manufacturers aren’t required to list the specific ingredients of their products, because they are deemed to be commercially sensitive. This makes it even harder for consumers who are trying to make informed decisions about the products they use for their families.

So what’s the answer?

Do you choose a ‘sensitive’ formula? Unfortunately, that’s no guarantee of a non toxic laundry detergent. You can’t trust the big name brands with their claims of ‘sensitive’ formulas. You have to get to the bottom of each and every ingredient.

And it’s not just about our health. Laundry products end up in our waterways, so we have to think of the environment when we’re choosing products, too. So many ingredients are toxic to aquatic life, not biodegradable (so they never break down and stay in our waterways and oceans), or cause algal buildup which kills fish and plants.

So how do you wade through the greenwash and misinformation to find the best laundry products for your family? The ones which are truly non toxic for you and the environment?

Well, that’s where I come in. I’ve spent months finding all the ingredients in laundry detergents, researching them and reviewing them so that I can recommend nothing but the best to you.

There are heaps of laundry detergents available in Australia. I’ve researched 50 different products from 37 different brands! I didn’t do all of the mainstream ones, because I know that they’re going to be mostly the same. But I did try to do as many ‘natural’ and ‘sensitive’ ones as possible. The Best Makeup Remover Wipes: Researched and Reviewed

Makeup remover wipes sound like the best beauty product ever, right? Just wipe off the day’s makeup, dirt and sweat and tumble into bed.

Unfortunately, if that’s what you’re doing, you might not be doing your skin any favours. Some makeup remover wipes use harsh ingredients that you really don’t want staying on your skin.

So how do you wade through the greenwash and misinformation to find out which are the best makeup remover wipes? Not the ones that say ‘all natural’ and then turn out to be made with synthetic and toxic ingredients, but the ones which are truly non toxic?

Well, that’s where I come in. I’ve spent months finding all the ingredients in face wipes, researching them and reviewing them so that I can recommend nothing but the best to you.

There are so many makeup remover wipes available in Australia. I’ve researched 56 different products from 43 different brands! With some of them, you just know they’re going to be chock full of toxic ingredients, so I skipped most of them. I’ve tried to include all the ‘natural’ ones, so that I can help you work through the greenwash. And I included a few mainstream ones, too, so that you can compare! The ones that I’ve reviewed are all in alphabetical order, below.
