Products We Love: Bon Ami Powder Cleanser

Here at Hello Charlie, we’re all about discovering and sharing the best and freshest innovations in the world of eco living. But there’s also something to be said about the old school products that have been low key “green” long before green living was even a thing.

The Bon Ami Natural Home Powder Cleanser is one of these.

You see, Bon Ami has been a household cleaning staple for more than 150 years, but it can still compete with its more modern counterparts in eco friendly cleaning. This green cleaner isn’t exactly exciting or flashy, nor is it knocking you over the head with words like “nontoxic” or “eco friendly.” It’s just a simple cleaning product that gets the job done while helping you minimise your eco footprint.

Bon Ami natural powder cleanser

What can the Bon Ami cleaning powder do?

Since 1886, people have been using Bon Ami Powder Cleanser on their tubs, sinks, toilets, tiles, stoves, ovens, cookware, bakeware, dishes, and wood furniture.

It effectively removes grease splatters, baked on food, soap scum, water stains, deep seated grout stains, mould, smudges on woodwork, scratch marks on china, rust stains, and other messes.

Bon Ami gets food residue off most countertops without scratching the material. It absorbs odours from pots and pans. It’s tough on soil and smudge marks on outdoor furniture. It removes scuff marks from floors. And because there’s no dye, you can even use it to get crayon marks and fingerprints off your white walls.

What’s in Bon Ami cleaning powder?

From the beginning, Bon Ami has stayed true to their name, choosing their commitment to people and the environment instead of caving to the pressure to use chemical additives — even when everyone else was. To this day, the original formula still has just 5 simple ingredients: limestone, feldspar, biodegradable cleaning agents (alkyl polyglucoside), soda ash, and sodium bicarbonate.

Unlike most mainstream powder cleaners, there’s absolutely no nasties in Bon Ami. No perfumes, dyes, chlorine bleach, and anything that can make you, your family, or Nature sick.

Bon Ami is biodegradable (great for the planet) and hypoallergenic (great for people with allergies). It’s safe enough for children to use, especially if yours have started taking on some of the chores. All Bon Ami packaging comes from recycled paper and bottles.

The Bon Ami Natural Home Powder Cleanser has an A+ rating from EWG, which means it’s “of lowest concern” and has “good ingredient disclosure” with “few or zero known and suspected health and environmental hazards.”

How to use Bon Ami Natural Home Powder Cleanser

Lightly wet the surface you want to clean. Next, sprinkle Bon Ami powder and rub it in with a wet cloth or sponge. Rinse off a couple of times. Don’t use hot water when rinsing, as this will only separate the powder and create more residue to rinse off.

Bon Ami is not intended for glass, mirrors, brushed stainless steel appliances, and lacquered surfaces. So if you’re unsure if the powder is too abrasive for a particular surface, test first on an inconspicuous area.

Lastly, don’t use too much powder. A little gets a lot done!

If you’ve sworn off bleach and other harsh chemical cleaning products, as we have, we highly recommend Bon Ami. You can get it right here at Hello Charlie. This is really good stuff that perfectly balances effectiveness, affordability, and safety. Give it a go!

Hello Sunshine! 123 Nourish Me Sunscreen Review

I get asked for natural sunscreen sticks all the time. And until now, I’ve had to say that I didn’t know of any.

So when one of my customers asked me to check out 123 Nourish Me’s Facestick, I got a little excited. Lots of kindies ask for parents to provide roll on or stick sunscreens, because they’re easier to apply. So I’m super happy to say that I’ve finally found a good one!

This zinc-based mineral sunscreen has an SPF 30, and it’s safe for children six months old and above. Zinc is the most soothing of the natural sunscreen ingredients, so it won’t irritate your little one’s skin.

Sunscreen for toddlers

Applying sunscreen to young children can be challenging – chasing them down and smearing them with cream while they scream and squirm. Honestly, who can blame them? Sunscreen creams can feel sticky and greasy, smell odd and taste terrible. And once kids hit the “I can do it myself!” stage you’ll have to contend with them trying to apply it on their own (and the subsequent mess).

This stick is so easy to use that my friend’s five-year-old son takes it to kindergarten and applies it all by himself. It’s a good way to get kids into the sun-protection habit early. Regular use of a natural sunscreen is a must, what with our bright Australian sunshine.

Mineral sunscreens offer safe and effective broad spectrum sun protection, but they can leave you looking like you’re wearing clown makeup. The 123 Nourish Me Sunscreen goes on clear, thanks to the micronised (non nano) zinc, and it’s easy to rub in (even on my husband’s unshaven face).

The stick does have a fairly firm texture, especially when it’s cold. You could try rubbing it between your palms for a couple of minutes before application to warm it up. We found that the best way was to rub it back and forth on your skin and it soon warms up and glides on.

I’m absolutely loving this for the kids. The stick has a firm lid that’s not going to pop off in the bottom of a bag, but kids can still open it easily. Throw it into the bottom of their beach or swimming bag and they’re covered. It’s water resistant, but still needs reapplication every two hours if you’re swimming or sweating a lot.

I’m completely happy with the Hello Sunshine ingredients, too. The mineral sunscreen formulation and natural ingredients mean you don’t have to worry about what your children are being exposed to. It’s gentle and doesn’t cause adverse reactions, even on sensitive skin. My kids break out in rashes with chemical sunscreen (we had an incident at school camp recently where my son decided to try his friend’s sunscreen instead of his own), but not with this one.

And I have to mention the smell. Hello Sunshine uses food grade vanilla, and I swear this smells like vanilla ice cream. My youngest loves this just because of the divine scent.

123 Nourish Me sunscreen ingredients

You can see this reviewed in our Biggest Ever Natural Sunscreen Cheat Sheet, too!

  • 100% preservative, oxybenzone and paraben free
  • Active ingredient is zinc oxide for UVA and UVB protection
  • Micronised particles reduce the white cast you get from some natural sunscreens
  • Scented with food-grade vanilla, so it has a delicious smell that my kids and I love
  • Castor, jojoba and coconut oils offer natural skin protection
  • Beeswax and carnauba wax for water resistance
  • Silica is a mineral that helps give the 123 Nourish Me stick its spreadability and silky texture
  • Vitamin E protects the skin from pollutants and acts as a natural preservative

  • Reef friendly

Tron Potty: Foldable, Biodegradable and Disposable

Tron Potty: Foldable, Biodegradable and Disposable

tron potty disposable and biodegradableToilet training. The very phrase strikes fear into the heart of parents everywhere. Your toddler refuses to wear a nappy any more. So you go through the ritual before you go out, making sure everyone’s been to the toilet. And you’re 20 minutes down the road, when a little voice pipes up from the back seat. “Mummy, I want to go potty!”.

So you pull over, and can’t find a toilet anywhere (or you do, and it’s so gross that you can’t bring yourself, much less your toddler, to use it). So then what do you do?

Well, now you can whip out the Tron potty! They’re foldable, disposable and fully biodegradable.

Cleverly designed (by an architect, no less) to support up to 30kgs, even the largest toddler can use one of these. In fact, you’ll be able to use these up until your toddler is around 6 years old.

Inside is a biodegradable pad that absorbs up to 250ml within 30 seconds, as well as all the smells. When you’re done, just use the clever little catch to fold it away (no touching required!) and the handle to pop it in the bin.

It’s small enough to fit into your nappy bag, under the pram, or in the car so it’s handy for emergencies.

Watch how easy it is to use:

How handy is that?

And the best part about it is that it’s fully biodegradable. From the cardboard, to the bag inside, and the absorbent pad.

And if your toddler decides that no, she actually doesn’t want to go now, you can just fold it up again and pop it back into your bag for next time.

It’s lightweight, portable, comfortable and hygenic. Toilet training genius, in our opinion!

Kester Black: Why You’ll Want To Get Your Hands On It!

Kester Black non toxic nail polish

We’ve just stocked a new brand of non toxic nail polish and we’re very excited to introduce the range to you.

Meet Kester Black, your new favourite nail colours. (They’re certainly ours!)

Why do we love this line so much?

Well, first of all, Kester Black is 10 free, which means no nasties. It’s also certified cruelty free and vegan, so no animals had to suffer in the process of getting these nail polishes onto your fingertips. Guilt free manis are made of this!

Second, Kester Black nail polishes are water permeable and breathable. Unlike lacquer based nail polish, Kester Black gives you a longer lasting manicure and is actually healthier for your nails.

Third, we love Kester Black because we’re in awe of the company’s commitment to their core values and of the many ways they try to make the world a better place.

kester black non toxic nail polish

Why we stock Kester Black

Did I mention that Kester Black is proudly Australian made?

Yes, and they’re committed to sourcing as many ingredients as possible from local suppliers.

Kester Black doesn’t use palm oil in any of their products and have never used xylene, TPHP, or ethyl tosylamide in their nail polish.

They use 100% renewable energy, donate 2% of their revenue to charities, and are a non discriminatory, gender neutral brand.

No wonder, then, that Kester Black is a Certified B Corp. In fact, in 2017, they were recognised as one of the Best in the World at leaving a positive social footprint. Impressive!

How does Kester Black nail polish stack up?

Kester Black nail polishes dry fast and last 5 to 7 days without chipping. The French brushes are curved to the shape of your nail. This makes application so easy – two strokes and you’re done!

But what really sets Kester Black apart from other non toxic nail polishes are the colours. We love the wide range of classic and on-trend shades. There’s definitely something here for everyone! My favourites are Cherry Pie (a showstopping red), Quartz (an award winning greyish purple), Original Detox (a deep aqua), and In The Buff (a classic nude made in collaboration with Melbourne’s very own Trophy Wife).

After you’ve picked out your shades, don’t forget to check out the water based nail polish remover (with aloe vera and vitamin E), nail polish remover wipes (100% cotton), and the top and base coat (for even longer lasting wear).

Curious about Kester Black? Shop the range here, or see some of our picks, below!

Shopping Guide to Natural Sunscreen

natural sunscreen shopping guide

natural sunscreen shopping guide

In the Australian summer, you can’t get away from sunscreen. It’s an essential part of your summer sun safety. But you need to make sure that you’re choosing a sunscreen with good ingredients.

And that means looking for a sunscreen that uses a physical barrier, rather than a chemical absorber, to protect you from the sun.  Ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium oxide physically block the sun. Chemical absorbers protect you by absorbing the sun’s rays. But there can be lots of issues with chemical absorbers, from health to environmental issues.

That’s why I always recommend using a natural, mineral based sunscreen like zinc based ones. There’s a large range of natural sunscreens now. And so it becomes difficult to choose!

Don’t forget to check out our Safer Natural Sunscreen Cheat Sheet, for an indepth look at 25 different Australian sunscreens.

Tips on using a natural sunscreen:

Zinc sunscreens are thick – that’s how you get the physical barrier and the sun protection. But there are a few tips to make it work for you.

  • Knead the tube before you squeeze it out, especially on a cooler day. I’ve found that if it gets hot, the oil can separate so you need to kind of squish it back next time yo use it. On a hot day, just give it a good shake before you apply.
  • Warm it between your hands before you apply to help it go on more easily.
  • Apply the sunscreen a bit at a time, and rub it in well. Then move on to the next area. This works better than squeezing a great big blob in to your hand and trying to cover everywhere at once.
  • If you have olive or darker skin tone, most zinc based sunscreens are going to leave a white cast. Try using a tinted sunscreen and rub it in well.
  • Remove zinc sunscreens with a face washer or baby wipe, plus warm water and a gentle soap.

Over the years, my family have use every single sunscreen we stock here at Hello Charlie. So here’s my opinion on them all:

Badger mineral lip tints open

Here are the three different shades (and one shimmer) and how you might use them:

Opal Shimmer

Wear this alone for just a hint of shine or layer it over the other Mineral Lip Tints to make the colours pop. Opal Shimmer stays true to your natural lip colour, making it a great everyday lip balm. It also works as a highlighter. Just swipe and blend on your upper cheeks, temples, and brow for a subtle glow.

I also think that this would be a great option for tweens and early teens who are wanting a bit of sparkle.

Rose Tourmaline

This one has a delicate pinkish hue that you can wear whenever, wherever. It’s classic, understated, and lovely – perfect for everyday wear. Rose Tourmaline goes on sheer, but you can build up the colour with a few strokes. It has a bit of sparkle (almost like Opal Shimmer), but it’s subtle enough that you can also use this to add some colour to your cheeks or even under the brow bone.

This is another colour that I think would work really well for tweens experimenting with makeup, too.

Red Jasper

Red Jasper is a delicate fire-red. One layer will give you a hint of colour, or build it up for a pop of colour.  The new formula is smooth and creamy without being sticky, so you can definitely also use it on your cheeks in a pinch.

Garnet

Garnet gives you a subtle deep red tint. But with a few more strokes, you get a deep plum-red that’s sophisticated and downright gorgeous. This is the one that I’ve been carrying around with me lately, and I love it. It’s surprisingly easy to use on cheeks, too. Just draw a stripe and blend in – gives a lovely glow to cheeks, and it’s super easy to use.

To get the longest lasting wear, use a base layer of the nutritive nail polish. Do a first layer of colour, allow it to dry, then do another layer for deeper colour. Allow that to dry, then pop on a top coat for ultimate protection. Touch up the tips with top coat every couple of days so that you don’t get wear on the tips.

The new range has 10 shades, plus the top and base coats. I love the cool names from music and dance styles. My favourite colours are in the image above – folk, waltz, mambo and rock. I also love tango, a bright pop of red; and ballet, which is a soft pink. I’ve been testing out folk, which is a soft lavender/lilac with a grey base that stops it from being too purple.

What Are B Corps And Why Should You Look Out For Them?

b corps using business to change the world

b corps using business to change the world

If you’re aiming to be a better, more informed consumer, there are a bunch of labels you probably know about.

Fair Trade, for example, tells you that the ingredients in a certain product were ethically sourced. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) label tells you that the product you are buying came from sustainably managed forests. There’s also ACO Australian certified organic, USDA Organic, NaTrue, Non GMO Verified, Cruelty Free, and lots and lots of others.

The B Corps label might not be as popular as these, but it’s one that you’ll see more and more of as companies shift to more socially and environmentally conscious practices.

The B Corps certification tells you that a company is always striving to do what’s right for people and for the planet. When you support B Corporations, you’re supporting businesses that aren’t all about the bottomline.

What are B Corps?

B Corps are for profit companies that operate as though they were nonprofits. They are certified by B Lab, a nonprofit organisation that aims to redefine success in business. The goal is to transform businesses into sustainable companies that create positive impacts, including a society that enjoys a more sustainable shared prosperity.

There are currently more than 2,000 B Corporations in more than 130 different industries. These are spread out in over 50 countries around the world. B Corps are certified by B Lab to meet strict standards of social and environmental transparency, legal accountability, and performance.

Certified B Corporations are those that scored over 80 in the B Impact Assessment. In this stringent assessment, companies are evaluated on their impact on customers, workers, communities, and the environment.

To become a B Corp, a company must also sign the Declaration of Interdependence, which says that it will consider all stakeholders, not just shareholders, in its business processes. B Lab envisions a future in which all companies compete not just to be the best in the world, but to be the best for the world.

Why should you support B Corps?

In today’s profit driven world, it can be hard to find companies that don’t use dodgy business practices, disrespect the planet, or exploit their workers. B Corps are rare gems as they’ve got nothing to hide. Instead, these sustainable companies aim to be forces for good.

B Corporations create benefits for their non shareholding stakeholders, including the environment, the local community, and their employees. It’s not all about making the top executives rich. In fact, to become a B Corp, a company must amend its corporate charter to include the interests of all its stakeholders into the fiduciary duties of its board members and officers.

This ensures that B Corps are fundamentally different from traditional profit maximising corporations and that the values of B Corporations are ingrained into the companies’ DNA.

According to the B Corps website, compared to other sustainable companies, B Corporations are:

  • 68% more likely to donate at least 10% of their profits to charity
  • 55% more likely to cover at least some health insurance costs for their workers
  • 47% more likely to use on-site renewable energy
  • 45% more likely to give bonuses to non-executive workers
  • 28% more likely to employ women and minorities in managerial roles
  • 18% more likely to have suppliers from low-income communities

Wotnot’s New Face Sunscreen – Reviewed

Let me get straight to the point here – I LOVE this sunscreen! I honestly think that it’s the first natural face sunscreen that I’ve used where I forget that I’m wearing it.

I have a confession. Although I’m always banging on about how you should wear sunscreen every day, it’s not very often that I do. I’m sun smart, and always wear a ridiculously enormous (and according to my children, embarrassing) sun hat, sunglasses and cover up. But sunscreen? Not so much.

If I’m at the beach, in the garden or out on a hike, I just put sunscreen on while I’m out and remove it as soon as I can. But for everyday wear, I find sunscreens dry my already very dry skin. Most chemical absorbers irritate me, and even mineral based sunscreens with titanium dioxide irritate me.

So Wot About Wotnot’s Facial Sunscreen?

Let’s have a closer look at the ingredients in the Wotnot Face Sunscreen.

The zinc oxide means that you get broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection, and it’s SPF 30.

Zinc oxide is the only active ingredient, so even super sensitive skins like mine shouldn’t have a problem with this. Zinc is soothing as well as being a physical sun barrier.

There’s organic aloe vera leaf juice, jojoba oil, and camellia oil to keep you hydrated and moisturised. And it works. I love that my skin didn’t feel dry or tight by the end of the day as it often does with sunscreens. And yet it’s not at all oily, either.

There’s green tea extract to help brighten and even your skin tone. I can’t say I noticed that, but I’m working long hours at the moment on our new website, and I reckon I’d need a miracle to brighten my tired self by now!

I’m intrigued by the addition of galactoarabinan. I’d never heard of this before, so I did a bit of research. Galactoarabinan is a plant collagen extracted from North American Larch trees, and the method of extraction is through hot water. So it’s completely natural, and there are no contamination concerns.

Also known as GA, studies have shown that it’s a natural SPF booster. It’s a gentle natural exfoliant, which helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It helps to reduce water loss through the skin, so your skin feels more hydrated.  And, it’s a very low irritant ingredient. I’m impressed!

What’s the verdict?

All in all, this is a very low irritant, mineral sunscreen that’s made with natural and organic ingredients. It’s moisturising, yet not oily. And it’s mattifying, and works really well as a primer underneath makeup. It doesn’t give you ghost face, yet it’s SPF 30.

I’ve already worn this every day for a week, under makeup and without makeup, just over the top of my moisturiser.

My hilariously pale English husband wore it on a 4 hour hike. He liked it (“yeah, it’s fine” is big praise from him) and I liked that he didn’t look like he had a blue face when he applied it over his stubble!

Three of my friends used it the next day on a 7 hour hike (don’t ask – it was meant to be 3 hours!) and thought it was brilliant. No stinging, even though we were all sweating, and no irritation. Plus, no one got burnt.

And my 14 year old, who will not wear sunscreen unless 3 people hold him down and apply it, actually liked it. He hates sunscreen that you can see, and grudgingly applied it after he examined my face minutely for traces of white. And when I asked him about it later in the day, he admitted that he’d forgotten that he was wearing it. Now that’s a result!

This is one sunscreen that already has a spot in my ‘everyday’ tray in my bathroom cabinet, and I can see that I’d better stock up for the summer ahead!

Ingredients

Active ingredients: Zinc oxide, 250mg/g, Inactive ingredients: Purified water, certified organic aloe vera leaf juice, diisopropyl adipate, coco caprylate, glycerin, jojoba oil, galactoarabinan, camellia oil, vitamin e, vp/eicosene copolymer, silica, polyglyceryl-3 polyricinoleate, polyglyceryl-3 diisostearate, polyhydroxystearic acid, Sorbitan Olivate, xanthan gum, green tea extract, iron oxide, epsom salt, cetyl palmitate, sorbitan palmitate, 1,2-dihydroxyoctane, octanohydroxamic acid, natural fragrance

Absolutely no worrying ingredients in this. I calculated that this would score a very low 2 in the EWG database.

How to use it

Apply this over your moisturiser, then give it five minutes before you apply your makeup. That way it’s not going to rub off.

If you’re using it in the sun, don’t forget to apply 20 minutes before going out, and then reapply regularly.

Where to get it
