Kids love trying out makeup and nail polish. But you don’t want them trying yours, because A. it’s expensive, B. it’s messy, and C. it’s not great for them.

So we are super excited to introduce Kid Licks!

Kid Licks is the first and only nail polish in the world to be so natural it’s actually edible.

Unlike regular nail polish, Kid Licks doesn’t have any toxic ingredients like acetone, formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP. They’re also free from artificial pigments, acrylate polymers, and polyutherane: stuff that’s in other kids nail polish brands.

Amazingly, Kid Licks natural nail polish is made entirely from organic fruits, veggies, and plants. The brand’s founders say that it’s so safe it’s suitable even for babies.

The Company

Kid Licks founders Audrey Amara and Josh Kroot set out to develop an all natural nail polish after their oldest daughter became intent on painting her nails by herself.

The couple was initially looking for a nail polish safe enough for children to apply on their own. Unfortunately, they couldn’t find one. So they decided to make a food based kids nail polish and, with the help of chemists and food safety experts, eventually came up with Kid Licks.

Why we like Kid Licks

Kid Licks natural nail polish is made with organic, non GMO, plant based ingredients, making it safe for little nails and little tummies. These polishes are also vegan and cruelty free. And the whole product is USDA certified organic.

The nail polishes are free of gluten, nuts (either peanuts or tree nuts), and dairy. However, if you or your child are allergic to any of these, note that Kid Licks products are currently made in a facility that also processes these ingredients. The company says that it is working on changing this.

Kid Licks nail polish contains no chemical preservatives and must be kept in the fridge once opened. Because these polishes are essentially food, they have a shelf life of three months. Not that it’s going to be a problem. They’re so good, we bet they’ll be used up way before then!

Kid Licks  goes on just like regular nail polish and dries in about five minutes. It has a semi-matte finish and the colours are pretty and natural looking. Because Kid Licks natural nail polish is water based, there’s no need for toxic nail polish removers. They scrub off with water and soap, making it easy for little children to remove all on their own. Even cooler, kids can suck it off their fingernails. (Probably not good if you’re trying to discourage thumb sucking or nail biting – it’s just too tempting!)

The ethics

Kid Licks provides a full list of ingredients for each of its products. So you can see exactly what goes on your children’s nails and – let’s face it – into their tummies. For example, the Beet Red kids nail polish ingredients are:

water (aqua), acacia arabica (acacia fibre powder), beta vulgaris (beetroot) powder, corn starch, erythiritol, sucrose cocoate (cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, sucrose, aloe barbadensis, potassium hydroxide*), gluconolactone, citric acid, xantham gum. *none remains after conversion of coconut oil and sucrose to sucrose cocoate.

These nail polishes are made in small batches in the USA. They are biodegradable and nontoxic, which means that they’re good for kids and the environment.

So far, Kid Licks edible nail polish comes in three colours:  Beet Red, Sour Carrot Orange, and Acacia Pink. Each bottle retails at $19.95.

While Kid Licks was designed specifically for children, there’s nothing stopping you from trying it for yourself! You can make the polish last longer by using a hair drier to set it and letting it cure overnight. Or you could try sealing it with a clear top coat to make it last.
